Mjölk till barnen

april 14, 2013

THE MILK FOR THE CHILDREN

We use to help children in an orphanage. There are 46 abandoned children there and the mother began about 20 years ago by taking care of a little girl who was found left alone. This orphanage has grown gradually. Many children are beeing placed in different places for anyone to find them. Since there are no abortions, the kids survive pregnancy. Young girls and poor mothers or parents are unable to keep their children.

A few years ago we wondered if we could buy a cow to the orphanage for the children to get milk every day. This year we visited the orphanage again and as they moved to another place and have an area the size of almost a football field with the new houses, flowers, shrubs, chickens, goats and a dog, so there is room and need for a cow. We visited various farms to find a nice cow possible to milk many liters 2 times daily.

We found a cow that is 4-5 years old, has already had two calves and is now pregnant and will calve in April. There are no green pastures to graze on as it is in Sweden, so therefore we bought a chopping machine, so that the staff at the orphanage can go out in the bush and pick twigs and green plants. These are chopped in the machine and mixed with corn flour and water, and then there is great food for the cow.

An association has given a large sum of money and it was a part of this money we used for the orphanage.

Olika färdsätt

mars 1, 2013

DIFFERENT MEANS OF TRANSPORT

When we started our help project at a school in Kenya, it was walking between our hotel and the school. The walk took almost one and half hour in each direction.

After we got to know the school's management better, we started admission of pupils. We did not choose ourselves which students we would offer help with school costs. It was made by the school manager.

If for example, we wanted to pay for three girls and three boys, he took out a list of the children most in needs.

When this was done, it was only to determine a date when we would go around and visit the various huts and invite to the school.

We started early in the morning and walked all day because the school had a large catchment area.

After a while, we thought that these walks were very exhausting in the high temperature.

We went then to rent bicycles including drivers. Some bikes were even equipped with a transistor radio under the seat so that if you wished you could listen to music while cycling. It proved to be a good idea because it was easy to get around in this way on the narrow paths in the bush.

After some time, disappeared bike crews from streets and they offered instead transport motorcycles.

We used a while this mean of transport until we got into an accident in which both of us were injured.

More recently, we have almost exclusively switched to use us a vehicle called tuk-tuk. It is a tricycle that can be likened to one of the rural motorcycle, which can take up to three passengers.

This vehicle is very well suited to our needs because it can move where there are hardly any roads at all.

Being able to rent a vehicle of any kind oneself is totally out of the question and because of the heavy traffic on the poor roads and partly because of the almost total absence of road signs and addresses in the country.

Skolfrukost

december 20, 2012

THE SCHOOL BREAKFAST

The last two years we have been paying for breakfast at school to a large number of students at one of the schools in Kenya. During our last visit the school's administration told us that the charge the school requested and we paid in advance was not sufficient and that the school had had to pay the difference.

This does not surprised us because we ourselves had a hard time believing that 50 crowns per child per school year would be enough.

The error was due to a miscalculation done by the school administration.

Thus, we have been in good faith selling the post-cards for 50 crowns each hoping that this would be enough for one student for one year.

Since the fee we paid for 2013 is 130 crowns per child per year, we can no longer sell the post-cards for 50 crowns.

However, we have decided to be selling the cards for 100 crowns each. The needed 30 crowns extra we will take from our other projects.

Spädbarnsdöd

december 2, 2012

Fyra timmar senare begravdes flickan utanför hyddan.

DEATH OF A BABY

One day when we were out walking in the village, near the school something we have not experienced before happened. We were accompanied by the pastor in the school to invite new 3-4 years old students that would begin in kindergarten.

The pastor's mobile phone rang and we knew something happened. He said that we should stop our work and go to a family who was in sorrow. In that family we have a foster child so parents wanted us to come. When we came to their hut father went out and told us that his youngest daughter, who was 3 months old, was dead. She had high fever and they had the day before gone to a doctor who gave her an injection and than, an hour before she died, she had received one more injection. They did not know what kind of a medication it was. We gathered around the little girl and prayed for her and the pastor showed great support for the family.

There was great sadness in the family and the older sister who knows us so well came and sat down in my lap.

Four hours later, the girl was buried outside the hut. The villagers made a wooden case, dug a hole in the ground and then she was put in there. There were no flowers on the grave.

The next day there was a memorial service in the afternoon and the family, their relatives, neighbors, church members, and we gathered along to sing. During the ceremony the music was played and the pastor spoke. The women sat on one side outside the hut and the men on the other side, and the pastor and we sat in the middle. As the memorial began to run out everyone could leave a gift. So they gave the family flour of different types, vegetables, a few shillings, or what they had, so the family could get something to eat.

The women who attended the memorial service were dressed in their colorful fabrics, no one had black clothes.

Vattenprojekt

november 25, 2012

Getprojekt

november 20, 2012

GOAT PROJECT

There is plenty of information in the media that one can buy a goat and give it to the poor. For this to happen, one has to make sure that the goat can be closed during the night, so thieves can not steal it. One must also ensure that there is a lot of grass and that the goat has a surface that it is allowed to eat at. There must be access to fresh water too.

We have received requests from our two friends in February to buy two goats as a gift for any family. It was a huge task that we worked with and in addition, there must be a dedicated family that would take care of these animals.

There was a family that we have known since we made our first trip to Kenya. They have four children and their father have built a hut made of mud, coral stones and cow manure he could get hold of. Inside the hut, there is a soil floor.

He made an 2.5 x 2.5 meters big extension on the side of the hut and poured cement floor for cleaning purposes and then added aluminum plate on the roof.

Then he bought two goats, one that is brown and black and one that is black and white, both two years old. The contract for the goats was signed with the thumbprints of the seller, the buyer and two witnesses.

We received a notice in July that all was well with both the family and the goats.

When we arrived in November both goats were pregnant and expected to give birth during the time we were there, and one Monday night it was time for the first goatling to see the light of day. It was a little, black male goat with a white spot on its forehead. After two days came the next goatling at night - a little female goat who also was black. The whole family was gathered on both occasions and for the kids it was a great event to talk about at school.

One goat took good care of his goatling and licked her clean but the second goat was assisted by father of the family to make him clean.

Here in Kenya one is considered to be rich having a goat.

This is a help to self-help, and we hope the family will be able to get food for the day in the future.

Rånförsök?

november 6, 2012

ROBBERY ATTEMPT

When we first visited Africa, we were part of something that we've thought a lot about during the thirteen years that have elapsed since then.

We were on a week's safari in Tanzania and stayed at the so-called lodges, which can be compared to our hotel. We spent one night at each lodge and the entire traveling party moved between the various lodges with the travel company's bus.

At such a transfer in the middle of the wilderness the following happened:

Suddenly we saw a man lying apparently lifeless behind a curve. Our first thought was of course that this causes the driver to slow down and stop the bus to see if we could somehow help the poor man.

Imagine our surprise when we noticed that the driver instead of slowing down increased speed and continued as if nothing had happened.

Our first thought was that the driver was completely wrong and that it was irresponsible not to stop and see how the man was doing.

Afterwards we got the explanation:

If we had stayed, it had been shown that the man was not at all hurt, but probably had his friends come rushing out of the bushes armed with machetes and forced us to give them our valuables.

The driver knew that this was a common way to rob the passengers in these buses as they knew that white people often had money and valuables with them.

So although we initially thought that the driver behaved inhumanly we were then pleased that he did not stop.

Veckopeng

oktober 28, 2012

POCKET MONEY

When we had the bazaar we were visited by two children, a boy 10 years old and a girl 3 years old. We had met them a few weeks before and then gave away all their pocket money to kids in Kenya to get food at school. For 50 crowns - one child can get porridge every day during school hours throughout the year. The boy and the girl became concerned that there is not always access to food for all the children in the world.

Basar

oktober 22, 2012

BAZAAR

We are very happy that we got so many visitors to our bazaar, and that there was a new record in terms of funds raised compared to previous bazaars.

It was also great to see that so many people had traveled very far to get to us.

It is difficult to describe the gratitude we feel for all the people who have helped us to get so much money for our project. Among those who have helped us are, for example:

Individuals, stores, churches, newspapers, musicians and not least the people who volunteered and helped us to undertake the bazaar.

It is also great that so many have promised to continue help us, which encourages us to proceed with our work in Kenya.

Vart tog min mamma vägen?

oktober 13, 2012

WHERE IS MY MOM?

During a market we saw a little girl sitting in a wooden box and looking at us questioningly with her big brown eyes.

Her mother had left her and her elder sister because she had a hard time taking care of her girls. A family who had four own kids and two other orphans took care of both girls. It's tough to provide food and school for a family that is already so poor.

After a few months after we came back sat Theresia still in a wooden box, a little apathic. No pad on the bottom to sit on.

Current mother selling vegetables in her stalls was there being helpful with her presence and changed diapers (cotton ones) if necessary. Little Theresia made absolutely no protest either from hunger or wet diapers.

We invited her elder sister to attend a school so she could start the first grade.

When we told this story here at home so have a sponsor family taken Theresia as their sponsor child and another family has taken her sister Joice as their sponsor child.
