För 10 år sedan träffade vi en man på vårt hotell som bl. a. jobbade med att bära gästernas väskor till deras rum. Vi fick väldigt god kontakt med honom eftersom han var mycket vänlig och hjälpte oss med en massa småsaker som gjorde vistelsen på hotellet bekvämare för oss.

Han berättade för oss att han hade 4 barn som han betalade skolgången för. Vid en snabb huvudräkning kom vi fram till att det han tjänade på hotellet i stort sett gick åt att bekosta barnens skolgång. Vi beslutade att hjälpa honom med utbildningen av en av hans döttrar.

Denna familj har blivit en av de familjer som står oss närmast idag.

För att ge en bild av hur livet är i Kenya vill jag ge en lite mer detaljerad bild av vad som har hänt familjen sedan vi träffades första gången.

Pappan, som heter Suleiman, berättade att han som ung var en mycket framstående fotbollsmålvakt på landslagsnivå. När högste chefen för hotellkedjan Sarova fick höra talas om honom såg han till att Suleiman anställdes på vårt hotell som tillhör Sarovakoncernen. Varje år utkämpades nämligen en prestigefylld fotbollsmatch mellan Sarovakoncernen och en annan stor hotellkedja som jag tyvärr har glömt namnet på. På detta sätt hade man sett till att man hade fått en målvakt av mycket hög klass.

C:a 3 år efter det att vi lärt känna Suleiman fick vi ett meddelande från honom att säkerhetstjänsten hade tagit honom och lett ut honom från hotellet och sagt till honom att aldrig mer sätta sin fot på hotellområdet. På grund av sin i sammanhanget höga ålder platsade han inte längre i fotbollslaget så hotellchefen valde att anställa någon annan till att överta Suleimans arbetsuppgifter. Detta blev ett hårt slag för familjen så man var tvungna att sälja huset som Suleiman själv hade byggt och flytta till ett litet rum i en by långt avlägset där de fortfarande bor. Man var även tvungna att sälja samtliga sängar och ligga på golvet.

Suleiman själv har varit arbetslös sedan detta hände. Frun kan tjäna någon krona ibland som hårfrisörska till grannarna.

Som framgår av detta lever familjen mycket fattigt trots att vi idag hjälper familjen med samtliga kostnader för utbildningen av tre av barnen.

SULEIMAN'S STORY

For 10 years ago, we met a man at our hotel which, among other things worked with carrying guests' bags to their rooms. We got very good contact with him because he was very friendly and helped us with a lot of little things that made the stay at the hotel more comfortable for us.

He told us that he had four children that he paid the school expenses for. After a quick mental calculation, we concluded that almost all the money he earned at the hotel went to pay for the children's school. We decided to help him with the education of one of his daughters.

This family has become one of the those who are closest to us today.

To give an idea of ​​how the life in Kenya looks like, I would give a little more detailed picture of what has happened to the family since we first met.

The father, named Suleiman, told me that he as a young man he was a very good goalkeeper of a football team playing on national level. When the chief of the hotel chain Sarova heard about him, he helped with that Suleiman was employed at our hotel. Every year a prestigious football match between Sarovakoncernen and another large hotel chain which I unfortunately forgot the name of, was played. In this way they had seen to it that the team had received a goalkeeper of a very high class.

Approximately three years after we got to know Suleiman we got a message from him that the security service had taken him and led him away and told him to never set foot on the premises. Because of relatively old age they said he was no longer on the football team and the manager chose to hire someone else to take over Suleiman's duties. This was a hard blow for the family so they had to sell the house Suleiman himself had built and move to a small room in a village far far away, where they still live. They also had to sell all beds and sleep on the floor.

Suleiman have been unemployed since this happened. The wife can earn a crown sometimes as a hairdresser for the neighbours.

The Suleiman's family live very poor despite the fact that we now help them with all costs for the training of three of the children.
