ASTA AND GÖRAN'S ACTIVITIES IN KENYA 2015-2016
As the safety of Kenya has significantly deteriorated recently, we consider it is beeing too risky to visit the country at present. Even the Foreign Ministry advises against staying in the country's coastal area where we used to be located.
For
this reason, we work on our project from our home, instead of traveling
there.
For the children, this means no major change, except for
that they cannot meet us personally.
We have a very good
control of the funds that we send there, and can be sure they really are used as they were intended.

ASTA AND GÖRAN'S ACTIVITIES IN KENYA
The activities are managed 15 km north of Mombasa, a town at the coast of the Indian Ocean.
We are staying at a hotel on Bamburi Beach at the coast and this is the starting point to our activities. We visit the area two times per year.
1999 we went to Tanzania in Africa to be members of a safari. Africa had earlier been a white spot on the map to us. On the way back home we stayed on Bamburi Beach in Kenya. During our promenades on the beach we got into touch with the local people who were selling fruits and other things. We realized immediately that the people lived in very poor circumstances.
An important coincident that made us to start our helping activities was that we met an orphan girl under the influence of malaria. Her situation and the fact that a fruiter who we had been in touch with earlier wanted to adopt his last born daughter to us did that we decided to start a helping project.
The funds we are collecting are used to education. The money makes it possible to 277 children up to class 8 to get education at nine different schools in the area. In the beginning we paid the education of some children ourselves but later we have got many sponsors and more children have been helped. We are also supporting a home for abandoned children and one home for orphans.
The activities will be paid for example in the following way:
Contributions from private persons,
Contributions from local clubs of Lions International from Oskarshamn, Högsby, Mönsterås, Målilla-Mörlunda och Älta,
Contributions from Oskarshamn-Döderhult club of Rotary,
Contributions from a Bazaar to which many shops and enterprises are sponsoring us,
Contributions from many Parishes in Oskarshamn.
We are also running an activity for about sixty godchildren.
The contributions consist of money but also of some small gifts which we can bring with us to Kenya. The contributions are built on confidence in us. Air flights and hotel costs and all personal expenses are paid completely by us ourselves.
We have never met some impediments to our activities and have been received with a lot of gratitude the whole time. Our visit in Africa includes about eight weeks every year. During this time we are visiting the schools and checking how the education is going on and how the given money is used. Home in Oskarshamn we spend a lot of time to report to the sponsors and to keep in touch with them.
We intend to go on with our helping activities as long as we are well.
